One of the most important things during an interview is to ask thoughtful, well-researched questions. Not only does this show you as an interested candidate, but it also allows you to make a well-informed choice when gauging any job offer.

 

When you are across from a future employer, it is easy to slip into selling yourself and your abilities. But remember, an interview is a two-way street.

 

On the other hand, the question of why you should work for them flips the script. It thereby portrays you as a wise candidate who works according to their plan by focusing more on syncing up and growing.

 

Asking the Right Questions

Know that you are not there to impress the interviewer but to determine if this company and role fit you. Some specific questions to ask during an interview include:

 

  1. If you are interviewing for a finance role, you may ask, “What are the most significant financial challenges the company faces, and what measures have already been taken to address them?” You might also inquire about how the company approaches ethical investing. 
  2. What are the biggest challenges faced by the department or team I would join?
  3. How will my performance be measured against the company’s short-term and long-term goals?
  4. What opportunities are there for professional growth within the company?

 

Assess Team Dynamics 

Asking questions about the role and company is necessary, but assessing what culture a company has during an interview is also critical. Here are a few things you can keep an eye out for:

 

  1. How do the employees interact with each other?
  2. What is the overall energy and vibe of the office?
  3. How do the interviewers speak to you?

 

Align Your Values

If you are passionate about entrepreneurship, for example, and the company is known for its innovative business culture, then express your enthusiasm for contributing to new initiatives. You should consider a company that puts its resources where the growth of its employees is concerned.

This alignment proves to your employer that you are seeking a partnership to find the right place where your contribution can successfully impact the company’s success.

 

Or, if work-life balance is your current priority, look for a company with flexible scheduling or remote working options.

 

Be Your True Self

Employers appreciate candidates who are transparent about their goals and are highly ambitious.

 

For example, you might say, “I’m eager to grow in a role that challenges me creatively and allows me to contribute to impactful projects. My digital marketing background can help the team achieve its current objectives in less anticipated time.” 

 

This positions you as a forward-thinking candidate ready to contribute, which employers give the first priority.

 

Closing the Deal

After you have asked all the questions and established value, the next step is to close. This means expressing your excitement about the job and company. Tell them how eager you are to be considered for the opportunity because you fit the position. Also, if you have any more concerns or reservations, now is the time to address them.
